We’ve looked at a whole range of strategies for motivating 14–16-year-olds. Many of them will also prove useful for motivating older learners. They can be tried separately or in combination. They aren’t all guaranteed to work all of the time with all classes; but they do provide a repertoire on which you can draw to find something that works – as a one-off or on a regular basis – for you and your learners. But although we’ve been talking in this chapter about 14–16-year-old learners in collective terms, we must also remember that, although there are shared or group characteristics, which we can learn to address, each learner will also have his or her own individual motivational needs.
